The journey I’ve taken with clay over the past 35 years has been a true gift to me. I know how focused I am and how relentless I can be with the pursuits of the perfect form to receive its crucial glaze. Many of what I consider to be failures find a home where beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When a piece “speaks” to those who purchase my work, I know that we have connected in a place that brings happiness to both. When I feel clay between my hands I know it won’t judge me. The clay lets me have my way, even when it’s a bad day in the studio. I manage to transcend what I envision in my minds eye to the finger tips that will create the form. And the clay rewards me when the finished piece exceeds all that I had envisioned. Over the past six years I’ve become obsessed with the sheer beauty of crystalline glazes. I’m spending the much needed time experimenting with various chemicals and colorants. I test different segments, holds and temperatures for the crystals to grow. There is so much more to do when working with crystalline glazes. And yet for me, I still pursue the perfect form to enhance and embrace the majestic crystalline glaze. I’ll be heading to Spain in April of 2013 where I hope to learn more from other crystalline artists. It’s an opportunity I did not want to miss and will be throwing new forms to elaborate the new techniques I’ve learned!
