A quote from our former Artist in Residence, Lauren Carly Shaw: “I can’t describe my time at Starry Night Retreat as anything less than one of the most rewarding, relaxing, inspiring, and prolific periods in my life. Not only was my creativity embraced and infused exponentially, but the experience of living in and enjoying a town so unique and charming as Truth or Consequences allowed me to focus and work without any reservations. There are no boundaries here–you are free from normal responsibilities, free from social pressures, free from time creating constraints. Here at Starry Night, you are given absolute freedom to be and explore your creative self. I’m not sure if it’s something in the air, the people, the frequent mineral baths, or just the magic of Starry Night, but I left having no less than 3 bodies of work nearly finished as well as a number of large drawings. I also left inspired and filled with ideas to continue with. I was able to focus and explore simultaneously. At Starry Night, I feel I was able to really be with my work. There was no rush, and when one piece was a bit challenging I was able to step away and gain some perspective in a way I have not been able to in the past. As someone who is accustomed to spending long periods in my studio alone, it was refreshing to have new and exciting artists come through Starry Night. Conversations are never futile, there is no minutia to discuss. I was put in touch with curators, have made lifelong friends, was given amazing critiques and insight into my work, started numerous collaborative projects, and completed more work than I thought possible in my two months at Starry Night. ”
