George Furbish

Presented by Spring Bull Gallery/Studio

A graduate of Amherst College, George has been a resident of southern New England for all of his life. Although having had a lifelong interest in art and architecture, he did not begin painting seriously until retirement from a thirty-five year business career. He began his art studies with classes at the Newport Art Museum, and has continued his studies under Richard Grosvenor, Nancy Gaucher Thomas, and David Barnes, among others. His art affiliations include The Portsmouth Arts Guild, The Wickford Art Association, the Newport Art Museum, and the Newport Artists Guild. He primarily paints landscapes and seascapes, focusing on the coastal environment of the region. George is a member of the Spring Bull Studio and Gallery, an artist’s cooperative gallery, located on Bellevue Avenue in Newport, where his latest work may be seen on an on-going basis. His original paintings are exhibited regularly in galleries throughout the region, along with giclee prints at selected print and framing establishments. Currently, in addition to the Spring Bull Gallery, he is represented by Arnold Art in Newport and Middletown, the Picture This Gallery in Wakefield, and Jamestown Designs in Jamestown. “I am primarily a painter of landscapes and seascapes. The natural beauty of the outdoors has always fascinated and inspired me. Through my art, I try to recreate for others the emotional connection that I feel while visiting certain places. The seasonal changes, the daily changes in atmospheric conditions, as well as the continuous changes in light, offer on-going inspiration and challenge to the landscape painter. Many of the same places that provided inspiration for great American landscape painters such as William Trost Richards, John Kensett, and Thomas Whittredge, also inspire me. My emotional reaction to places varies depending upon the time of day or year, atmospheric conditions, or the presence of other people. Through my painting, I hope to share some of these same emotional connections with others.”
