TAMPA, Fla.— The Florida Museum of Photographic Arts will exhibit North and South: Berenice Abbott’s U.S. Route 1, organized by the Syracuse University Art Collection, from October 8, 2018 – January 11, 2019.
Works shown include fifty final pieces picked from twenty-four hundred negatives that Berenice Abbott took in June 1954, while traveling south along U.S. Route 1 from New York to Key West. Accompanied by two other companions, Berenice also backtracked along the routes northern terminus at Fort Kent, Maine.
In the two years following their trip, Abbott documented the historical importance of the journey by making prints and writing a prospectus; in which see said, “We wanted to capture visually the character of an historic section of the United States, its beauties and incongruities and all. If visible evidences of the past survived, we wanted to photograph them before bulldozers and derricks moved in.”
Abbott’s summer tour up and down the east coast defines America’s past and present. “Berenice Abbott was known for her portraits and documentary work. Today her work communicates historical and educational value of photography. In this specific project she mastered the dialogue between artist, photographic print and contemporary viewer”, said Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D.
North and South: Berenice Abbott’s U.S. Route 1 will be on view during regular museum operating hours and is included in the general admission fee. To learn more about this exhibition and other programming at the museum, visit www.fmopa.org
