Jing (Ellen) Xu | I Do Have Choices
Garrison Art Center
Sep. 12, 2026 - Oct. 4, 2026
For the exhibition, Xu brings together her ongoing modular series of 120 small clay-and-canvas works with earlier clay pieces, newly developed red-and-black works, and recent drawings. Together, these works explore repetition, color, choice, and how small decisions can build into larger systems of form, memory, and attention.
At the center of the exhibition is a series built from five colors, arranged in every possible sequence. Through repeated circles, handmade clay rings, dense mark-making, and shifting color patterns, Xu transforms simple choices into an expansive field of variation. Across the exhibition, these repeated gestures begin to suggest cellular forms, maps, cosmic structures, and fragile architectures.
The title ‘I Do Have Choices’ speaks to the tension between limitation and possibility. For Xu, choice isn’t necessarily one dramatic moment—it can be a quiet, repeated process of making, adjusting, and continuing. A single ring of clay, a drawn circle, or the decision to place one color before another becomes part of something larger.
“I am interested in how a very small action can become a structure,” says Xu. “Each decision is small, but the accumulation creates pressure, rhythm, and movement.”
