Ierimonti Gallery is pleased to present The Place For Standing Still, the first solo exhibition for artist Iulian Bisericaru in NYC.
Every other space that Iulian Bisericaru brings forward is connected through a measure of near and far rather than a set of probable associations. By bridging together mountain versants to the unlikely occurrences of near-abstract shapes, the artist underlines a bothersome tear into our reality.

Architecture of solitary building ties into shards of the sky and collapsed tree trunks give in to striking Matisse patterns or abstract expressionist shapes. Iulian Bisericaru stubbornly toys with rules of perspective, following a painterly materiality in his color screens, mixing faux-collages and spray-paints, challenging a traditional understanding of landscape representation. Iulian Bisericaru’s paintings lead to a reality in which the anthropocentric order breaks, revealing the absence of a steady horizon line and an appreciation for environmental enclaves.

The core of Iulian Bisericaru’s work is contained into a critical eye towards ecology, an interest that has developed into a research on architecture and painting, for his PhD thesis at the Art and Design University in Cluj-Napoca. After making his debut with a series of post-industrialist landscape paintings inspired by old factories in post-communist Romania, Iulian Bisericaru started reinterpreting utopian architectural theories across Europe and the United States. His series of Usonian houses quickly led him to experimenting with different styles of painting looking on towards East Bay Area Movement influences, architectural suburban projects of the United States during the seventies and the eighties, juxtaposing images from multiple perspectives on failed utopias and re-imagined ones.

Iulian Bisericaru (b. 1987) has graduated from the University of Arts and Design, the department of painting, Cluj-Napoca where he also currently writing his PhD thesis, researching the links between architecture and painting. Iulian Bisericaru’s lush landscapes artworks approach space through a different, complementing lens: bewildering image collages of architectural snippets and environmental engagement. In the summer of 2017 he attended International Summer Residency
Aschersleben, being supported by the Eigen +ART Gallery. The artist residency inspired his latest solo show opening early December 2017 at Anca Poterasu Gallery in Bucharest. In 2009 Iulian Bisericaru received a scholarship from the Art Academy in Macerata, Italy was nominated for Start point Price and he won Expomaraton Award. In 2017 his work Diebenkorn background was featured in the Italian Journal La Lettura – Corriere dela Sera (July, 2017).
