City Works

Vessels Gallery presents City Works, a solo exhibition of nationally recognized ceramicist, Stephanie Young. Young is known for her porcelain vessels, which are carved in the Art Deco and Art Nouveau traditions. With a keen eye to nature she creates studies of insects, ocean creatures and flowers – “classic forms with new science.” Each of her porcelain pieces is wheel-thrown, and when leather-hard, hand-carved elaborately without templates or stencils.
In CITY WORKS, a collection created for Vessels Gallery, Young turns to the man-made, weaving together art and architecture for a fresh reflection on the history of Boston. The surfaces of these new vessels are carved with the facades of iconic Boston architectural landmarks. From Commonwealth Avenue Brownstones to the towers of the Longfellow Bridge Young draws the viewer’s attention to the ornamental details of the buildings — windows, doors, archways, reflections of her own visual intimacy with the Boston of the turn of the century.
