Garden City, NY:
Another Woman’s Life
Drawings by Melanie Reim
May 31st – August 15th, 2016

Nassau Community College and the Firehouse Plaza Art Gallery are proud to present ANOTHER WOMAN’S LIFE, a solo exhibition by artist Melanie Reim. The exhibition features drawings that depict the lives of the women she crossed paths with during her travels throughout the Dominican Republic. As a Fulbright Scholar in the Dominican Republic, Melanie took to the sugar cane fields with her sketchbook and supplies, not only illustrating her own reportage, but also giving art lessons to the children in the local bateyes. With a close eye on the bulls nearby, she filled her books with work that she is now sharing with those who love to love drawing on location.

“For this body of work, I choose to highlight those women whose paths I have crossed – albeit at times, a fleeting glimpse from a car during a road trip, but also when this camaraderie of sisterhood transcends language and culture and creates a memory and experience for me that last longer than the snap of a camera. It might be the simplest of tasks – at times, so familiar but also so different, and mostly, somewhat magical to me when I see it outside of my own surroundings. The beauty that I see in these women, all resonate for me and allow me to fill in from my mind’s eye as I leave. Gone from the scene but certainly not forgotten. These moments in time represent some of the richest experiences that I have enjoyed as an artist, and as importantly, as a woman.” – Melanie Reim
