Roman Polanski’s early work depicts isolation and trauma with staggering empathy – an empathy that, it must be said, is entirely at odds with the director’s personal life. Like Polanski’s brilliant Repulsion, Rosemary’s Baby transmutes a lurid pulp premise into a lucid examination of patriarchy and repression. Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes give intensely layered performances as the Woodhouses, forming the core of the film’s black satire. Few directors made horror movies with the acuity and finesse that Roman Polanski did: come out and see for yourself.
