A Conversation with Artist Don Gummer and Curator Luke Syson will take place on Wednesday, March 23 from 6-7:30 pm in the Wien Experimental Theater located in the Quick Center for the Arts.

The Italian Renaissance sculptor Donatello is reported to have declared that drawing is the foundation of sculpture. Though not all contemporary sculptors put that maxim into practice, it holds true in the case of artist Don Gummer, who creates drawings and watercolors to test, elaborate, and reiterate ideas for his wall reliefs and monumental, free-standing bronze and marble sculptures. Gummer’s layered process of making drawings, collages, models and sculpture, and the connections linking these intersecting bodies of his work, will be among the topics explored in this informal and free-ranging conversation between the artist and Luke Syson, Chairman of the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Organized in conjunction with Don Gummer, The Armature of Emotion: Drawings and Sculpture, on view in the Walsh Art Gallery from March 4, through June 11, 2016.
