Core Members Exhibitions: Barbara Veatch, Camie Rigirozzi and Maggie Stewart

Details:  “Layered Landscapes and Time Tracks” – Barbara Veatch

Several of the works in this current exhibition all had previous lives. Barbara Veatch cut, collaged, layered, and painted over older works and breathed new life into them. Exciting, risky, and exhilarating when it works. For her this process was almost a metaphor for living. We rejoin, and reconnect whether it’s in relationships or places we’ve visited, trails we may have hiked, philosophies we may have held.

As we review and recombine elements of our lives we should fuse the old with the new. Ideally life should surprise us as should our investigations of the beautiful. Veatch’s work uses symbols from nature as inspiration, and she favors mixed media so as to open up lots of possibilities. Substrates include paper, boards, canvas, and wood. She really enjoys the soft, sensuous touch of soft pastels and uses them frequently.

Veatch opened up new pathways in how she sees the world and hopefully kept a positive way forward convinced that the pursuit of truth and beauty will prevail.

“Discovering Humanity: Life on Repeat” – Camie Rigirozzi

“Life on Repeat”, the fourth installment of Camie Rigirozzi’s “Discovering Humanity” series, examines the patterns—emotional, societal, behavioral, and psychological—that quietly shape our lived experience. This body of work reflects on the cycles we inherit, repeat, and sometimes resist, offering a deeply contemplative view of the repetition embedded in both personal histories and collective memory. Through rhythmic compositions, recurring motifs, and moments of accidental nuance, Rigirozzi reveals how routine and ritual accumulate into something larger than their parts: the shape of a life. At its core, the series asks how many repetitions it takes for a small, imperfect being to find context, to become whole, and to accept both its form and its flaws.

While earlier chapters of “Discovering Humanity” examined emotion, boundaries, empathy, and vulnerability, Life on Repeat turns inward to explore the tension between striving and surrender. These works dwell in the rhythm of trying and failing, of effort and release, allowing mistakes to remain as integral to the work rather than erasures of it. Rigirozzi frames repetition not as failure, but as a gesture of compassion—an acknowledgement that imperfection is truth. In this way, the series offers not resolution, but a quiet witnessing of the cycles we return to, honoring them as evidence of our persistence, our becoming, and our humanity.

“Botanicals” – Maggie Stewart

Maggie Stewart is a native of Denver and has been a professional artist for over thirty five years. She is the proud owner of Mama’s Belly, a 26 year old company specializing in bronze belly bowls. She has taught at museums and art centers for over thirty five years. Maggie is currently co-director of Core gallery a Denver based co-op since 1981.

Maggie is presently working on two large shows featuring ceramic organic forms inspired by her macro botanical photography. These ceramics will be presented on her hand painted silk and hand made paper alongside the inspirational photos tying together multiple mediums and celebrating the beauty and movement of nature. Alongside this work is her continual fascination with the tool as art, resulting in ceramic and horsehair Sumi brushes in a myriad of sizes. This is in anticipation of her performance art piece using extremely large Sumi brushes and a steel gantry.

Maggie believes there is nothing more engaging than growing something from seed and watching it bloom, then finding inspiration in it and taking that to your ceramics! Her love of macro photography, finds her looking deeply into the structure of plants and flowers. These shapes and formations translate into ceramics beautifully. The challenge is to bring a sense of flow and fragility to the ceramics. Maggie is an artist who constantly experiments, and in the past two years, she has jumped into the exploration of alternative firings. Naked Raku, Saggar, Obvara, soda and pit firings have become her sculptural vocabulary. She finds the unpredictable results exhilarating and inspiring! This show is a diary entry of her current ceramic practice.
