The 2020 prize invites emerging artists, photographers and filmmakers to submit one work that explores Baron’s core themes – sex and sexuality and identity politics. The winner is awarded a £1000 cash prize and a selection of art and photography books worth £1000.

Each submission must contain a 500-word artist statement about the work. Here you must contextualise your submission and explain the meaning.

The submission must consider a rational behind the construction of the work and you must evidence this in your artist statement. For example, you must find meaning aligned with your chosen concept, about how your work is made, this should include your chosen medium, casting or subject, interiors and exteriors and techniques.

The submission must be one work. The works original context could be from a series of works and can be new or existing work.The submission can use any medium, for example this could be a film still, documentation of a performance, a painting, word art to photography. The Baron prize for art and photography will be judged by a transnational panel.

Judges

Ashleigh Kane is the Arts & Culture editor of Dazed & Confused since 2014. Ashleigh has been widely recognised for her work with new photography and art talents, many of which are now creative agenda setters all over the world.​

Bruce Labruce is a Canadian artist, writer, filmmaker and photographer based in Toronto. His work explores themes of sexual and interpersonal transgression against cultural norms.​

Matthew Holroyd is the co-founder and creative director of Baron and Baroness.

Nadia Lee Cohen is a British photographer, film maker and performance artist inspired by American and British cinema of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Her work has been published and exhibited internationally.
