Open Call for Artists: FSU New Union Construction Project
FSU Student Union
Entry Deadline: Jul. 1
Florida State University (FSU) is seeking proposals from contemporary artists for one or more large-scale wall-based works, installations, or murals for permanent display in FSU’s new Student Union building (Main Union Stairway, 26 feet high by 14 feet wide). Proposals may be for the display of existing works or for new works that would be created specifically for the space. Artwork must be original and appropriate for all ages to view. Works must be flat or shallow relief, relatively lightweight, and capable of being mounted safely in one part or multiple parts on vertical, drywall finished surfaces. Priority will be given to proposals that would enliven the building’s interiors with bright colors, dynamic designs, or representations of subjects and themes suitable for a civic space that serves students and the wider University community. FSU may award one or more commissions for the available spaces. At present, the total available budget for commissions or purchases (including shipping and installation costs) is $50,000.
While the selection committee will consider all submissions, priority will be given to works that represent and celebrate the Seminole Tribe of Florida’s culture and history. Preference will be given to artists with Seminole ancestry.
Artists should submit the following, formatted into one PDF document, by July 1, 2021 to [email protected]
• Artist statement and bio
• CV/Résumé
• Links to artist website and social media handles
• 10–20 images of representative work
Finalists will be asked to provide a description of their proposed commissioned piece (no longer than 250 words), a detailed budget that includes any reproduction costs (printing on vinyl, a muralist, etc), and proposed timeline for completion. This will be due on October 1, 2021.
To thank artists for the time and attention it takes to develop these proposals, the top 3 finalists will receive $5,000. The chosen artist will also receive $50,000, to include installation and any required printing, muralist, etc.
