The Huntington Museum of Art presents American Impressionism, a style of painting that came to us from Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

French artists that influenced American artists through studios and exhibitions included Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard Manet, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Alfred Sisley, Camille Pissarro and Gustave Caillebotte.

American impressionism flourished in art colonies the most significant being at Cos Cob and Old Lyme, Connecticut. While others spun off in Long Island Sound; New Hope, Pennsylvania, on the Delaware River; and Brown County, Indiana. Art impressionist also began in California at Carmel and Laguna Beach; in New York on eastern Long Island at Shinnecock, with William Merritt Chase.

The Huntington Museum of Art has a permanent collection of significant American Impressionist paintings. This special exhibition will present museum holdings that include works by Childe Hassam, J. Alden Weir, Willard L. Metcalf, John H. Twachtman, Frank Benson, Edward Willis Redfield, W. Elmer Schofield and Arthur Meltzer.
