Fakes? Forgeries? Come to this fun exhibition and see how member and guest artists create their own take on museum masterpieces. The show culminates with a GALA AUCTION AND DANCE PARTY on Saturday, October 1 from 8:00 to 11:00 pm. Visitors to the gallery can place sealed bids to be opened at the Gala, which will feature wine, hors d’oeuvres, a DJ and dancing (tickets are $25 advance purchase [call Kent McCoy at 860-249-3846] or $30 at the door). Suggested gala attire: creative black tie or costume.
The solo show by Michelle Thomas is entitled “SANKOFA ‘KNOW THYSELF,’” from an African proverb. This represents a personal journey, “looking back upon my life, retracing past lives and experiences to glean knowledge of self.” Thomas sees the human capacity to rise above injustice, discontent and outright hatred, and aspires to promote “healing in this hurting world.” Her work is emotionally powerful, richly symbolic and skillfully rendered. Retired from the Connecticut Air National Guard after 21 years of service, she is now the resident artist at Montessori School of Greater Hartford.
“Painted Faces,” the solo show of Ruth Jacobson, emphasizes “colors, energy and motion” in portraits of people from different cultures and backgrounds. Her aim is for the “viewer to see the light, the vitality, the dignity in each of us.” She creates dazzling images using pastels, oil and acrylic. Jacobson has a BFA from Tyler School of Fine Arts, Temple University and is a member of the Connecticut Watercolor Society. Her work has been exhibited in numerous museums and galleries in New England and Philadelphia, including the New Britain Museum of American Art, The Mystic Art Museum, Springfield Museum and Wadsworth Athenaeum.
Please join us for a FREE opening reception for the three exhibitions on Saturday, September 3rd from 6:00-9:00 pm.
