Suzan Scott
Presented by Gallery on the Green
Suzan Scott's work focuses exclusively on the sky. Scott has purposely eliminated all reference to landscape, choosing to emphasize the universality of her subject and the unity of all living things under one sky. The Weather Project is a continuing body of work which the artist has developed to explore the depth and breadth and wonder of our delicate and resilient upper atmosphere and our relationship to it. “The sky has always had a special fascination for me. As a child, I spent hours daydreaming and watching the play of light and clouds move across the sky. I still have the same sense of awe and wonder as I gaze upwards today. Since August 2006 I have used The Weather Project to explore awareness; it is my attempt to become more mindful, to look more closely, and to experience more fully what is around me. I began by taking a photograph of the sky each day and spending a few minutes simply “looking”. This practice is taken one step further when I select a day to render in paint. When I work, I use both the photograph and my experience of the day to render an image of the sky at a specific moment in time. In each piece, the elements of movement, color, and light reflect the changing moods of the day. As I begin to work, I slip into that moment. Painting becomes a process of mark making and response. The finished piece is the result of the dialogue between myself and the day; a piece of sky.” Scott says “…everything that I could ever want to express, I see mirrored in the sky.” "...the sky is for all… " John Ruskin
