Patrick Rivera - Potter
Presented by Wesleyan Potters
My interest in pottery began while on a family vacation in the mid 1960's to an old village in Mexico. The village potter put young Jordan Patrick on a kick wheel. I was immediately taken with the mud, and squealed to my Dad as he lifted me off the wheel, "That's what I want to do when I grow up!" Decades passed and life took me from the Southwest desert to the West Coast, up to the Northwest kingdom and finally to New England. Here I found the luxury of time allowing me to explore my childhood excitement of forming mud into usable forms. A chance visit to Wesleyan Potters on a rainy October day in 2000 was what was to become the educational venue and creative environment I was looking for. The following two years of full time pottery classes scheduled between Wesleyan Potters, Canton Clayworks and Elmwood Community Center, continually developed my skills and techniques. Showing talent and promise, I became a Key Member of the Wesleyan Potters' Cooperative. I have studied under the instruction of David Frank, Deb Staub, Tim Scull, & Gary O'Neil among others. I have taken informal workshops with Guy Wolff and Simon Leach and attended workshops with Larry Watson and Gertrude Graham Smith. My work has been shown and sold at The Stone Fish Gallery, The Eastern States Exposition, Artisan Gallery in Northampton, MA, and The Wesleyan Pottery Gallery. The pottery is high fired in a reduction down-draft kiln and finished with non-toxic glazes on functional surfaces. All the ware is dishwasher, microwave & oven safe, but should avoid a direct flame & pre-warmed ovens as this will shock the cold pottery & crack the piece. Beyond producing well finished pottery, I believe in the spirituality of imperfection and the wisdom of the journey: We shall not cease from exploration And the end of all our exploring Will be to arrive where we started And know the place for the first time.
