Anthracite, 1939, carborundum print. Gallagher (1898-1965) from a Scranton, Pennsylvania mining family, Gallagher served in the US Army during the First World War. He studied at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Design and with Earl Horter in Philadelphia and Carl Dufner in New York. In the 1920s he contributed drawings to The New Yorker and other magazines. He ran the Works Progress Administration’s Philadelphia Printmaking Workshop.
