JoAnn Cox became intrigued with abstract painting in the 1960's. The strong, simple design and muted colors of her early works were evocative of the stark landscapes of the Mississippi Delta, where she lived as a child. Still based on a strong sense of design, her paintings have evolved into bold works built with multiple layers of glazes, often incorporating gold or silver leaf. Although JoAnn works in other media and styles, including realism, sculpture, contemporary weaving and fiber works, lace making and paper making, she prefers abstract painting. "Occasionally I enjoy exploring something different, but I'm always drawn back to abstract, non-representation paintings," she says. "I like the challenge of creating a subject that exists only on the canvas and resolving the problems that make it work as a painting. My paintings are not 'of anything' or symbolic of anything, at least not consciously. They are simply my paintings. People sometimes tell me they see a subject or feel symbolism in a work, and that's okay. Everyone should feel comfortable experiencing a painting from their own personal point of view." JoAnn has studied art at the University of Southern Mississippi; Blackpool Technical College of Art, Blackpool, England; Cite Universite, Paris, France; and Annascaul, Ireland. She lives and maintains a studio in Mobile, Alabama, where she works full-time as an artist. Her works have won numerous awards and are represented in many public, corporate and private collections.
