Presented by CATINCA TABACARU gallery

GAIL STOICHEFF (born 1976, Pennsylvania) draws from the realms of politics, fashion, music and celebrity as they intersect with personal experience. Her interest lies in modes of cultural production, spanning low to high, as they overlap with painting and its accompanying ideologies. Her work is a coming-to-terms through process with vessels of power and the potent emotions they evoke. The most recent work considers the ‘exotic,’ both animal and human, and symbols of mysticism as they coincide with the mythos of nonobjective painting. Stoicheff has been with the Gallery since its inception. Her work has evolved from the abstract to the figurative, correlating with a heightened confidence in both her technique and her ability to interest collectors and institutions. She was the recipient of Robert Motherwell’s prestigious Dedalus Foundation Master of Fine Arts Fellowship in Painting, as well as The Elaine DeKooning Painting Award, and was recently the featured cover artist for Little Star Weekly literary journal and the New England Review. “Gail Stoicheff uses masking and stencils to create a sea of lines, which result in a fractured explosion of color.” -Amra Brooks, LA Weekly, June 21, 2007
