Clay is my invitation to enter a quiet world. It lets me play and explore with my hands. When I step into my studio I don’t always know what I will be doing. Clay calms me. Time stands still. I may work on perfecting a single form, try something entirely new or let the moment guide my creative juices. On the wheel my focus is primarily functional forms. I make large bowls meant to be held in one hand or on ones’ lap for soup or salad or placed in the center of the kitchen table to catch the daily pileup of papers and for serving family sized meals. Recently I have started a series of small colorful covered containers. I love making tumblers and mugs and the way they feel in my hand. When I hand build I work quickly and subconsciously. I add texture and/or color as a form becomes more familiar to me. Currently I am exploring small clay sculptures and I am playing with animal shapes.
