About the Artist

“I am an abstract sculptor dealing in space, place and form. My work relies on formal clarity and uses variations of complementary elements. I work in stone, steel, wood, aluminum and plastics, and I use computer-aided design where appropriate. I believe that the challenge and joys of creation are equally related to visualization and execution. For me, working in sculpture is a compulsion rather than a possibility.

My approach requires the ability to execute the entire process of sculpture. I believe a sculptor should recognize our figurative history and the traditional process of making sketches and working out the form with maquettes. The ultimate scale is based on the idea that sculpture is more than an object in space, becoming a place in itself.”

Gilbert Boro, New York born sculptor, lives and works in Connecticut. Gilbert says about his art: my sculpture is concerned with the concepts of space, place and scale using various materials such as steel, stone, aluminum, wood, and even plastic. The materials do not set my direction, instead I attempt to make the materials yield to me while still preserving and embracing an understanding of their limits. My work relies on formal clarity and uses variations of complementary elements. To me the challenge and joys of creation are equally related to visualization and execution. My approach requires understanding and executing the entire process of creating sculpture. I don’t believe that art needs to solve or define problems for the public. What art should do is provide the best opportunity to retain or regain the creativity we all had as children and let us feel we can experience the work without intellectual limitations and rules.

His work has been exhibited in galleries, art centers, public art venues and private collections throughout this country and in Europe. Some of his large sculptures are now on view at Kavachnina Contemporary Gallery in Miami. In Connecticut, his work can be seen at Wells Fargo Bank (Madison), Purdue Pharmaceuticals office park (Stamford), the Sculpture Mile (Ivoryton), Studio 80 and Sculpture Grounds (Old Lyme), Goodwin College (East Hartford) and the University of Connecticut at Avery Point (Groton).
