Acquavella Galleries presents Wayne Thiebaud: A Retrospective.
This exhibition will include works spanning Wayne Thiebaud’s career from the 1950’s to the present. Included will be paintings, works on paper and prints of the artist’s most significant subject material: confections and diner foods, figures, San Francisco cityscapes, Sacramento Delta, and his California series. On loan to the gallery will be paintings from the Whitney Museum in New York; The Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C.; Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Crocker Art Museum of Sacramento and Phoenix Art Museum. A very unique aspect of this show will include several works from the artist’s personal collection.
Wayne Thiebaud (born November 15, 1920) is a California painter whose most famous material include cakes, pastries, boots, toilets, toys and lipsticks. He is considered part of the Pop art movement due to his singularly subject based compositions and cultural representations, although his works predate the works of the classic pop art. Thiebaud’s art work is distinguished by thick paint and well planned exaggerated colors to focus his compositions, and accentuates his compositions with defined shadows that are characteristic of his work.
