Twist and Shout features six artists whose figures bend, twist, and fracture – communicating what words cannot. Rooted in Expressionism, the exhibition moves fluidly between abstraction and figuration, where grotesque caricature and distortion are a visual shorthand for emotion, tension, and identity. As artists – Alex Ceppi, John Guzman, Louisa Pancoast, Melissa Stern, Yue Yuan, and Tamsen Williams – echo the prevailing mood and emotional state of our nation, curator Ellen Hawley helps bring these expressions into a broader conversation. Some works lean into dark humor, while others are raw and gritty, but together they explore movement, resilience and the expressive potential of the human figure.
