NEW YORK, NY—February 7th, 2017—Kathryn Markel Fine Arts is pleased to present Swirl and Roil, Lorene Anderson’s first solo show with the gallery.

Lorene Anderson’s paintings have a kinetic energy perfectly fitting her exploration of turbulence, gesture, and the movement and folds of space. Her undulating stripes, dimensional layers, and selective use of reflective paint transforms a two-dimensional surface into a churning, vibrating composition. The dynamic nature of her pieces even suggest environments beyond the picture plane itself, her marks seemingly extending around and beyond the edges of her paintings.

Anderson’s latest body of work has evolved beyond being inspired by the rolling countryside of France to diving into math and science-oriented influences like topology, subatomic particles, and waves of light and sound. She drew from early photographic studies of fabric falling through the air that captured space and light as form to guide the movement of her lines and layers. She begins with a wash over her surface, then builds up thick layers of paint by pouring it and allowing it to drip and roll around the plane, pulling it across the surface with hand-carved squeegees, or applying it with large brushes in broad gestural strokes. Then Anderson scrapes her stripes down through the layers, revealing the hidden information that lies beneath and creating tactical depth, throwing off balance and perception.

Anderson’s work is a playful investigation of figure-ground and the relationship between positive and negative space. Her paintings are hypnotizing, shifting from meditative tranquility to roiling chaos and back again.

Lorene Anderson has exhibited widely across the United States and around the world including at the Oakland Museum of California, Kyoto Museum, Los Gatos Museum, Marin Museum of Contemporary Art, and Tangent Contemporary Art. She has completed residencies with the Sam and Adele Golden Foundation for the Arts and La Porte Painte Center for the Arts. She has an MFA from the University of California Berkeley and a BFA from Miami University Ohio. Anderson lives and works in California.
