Flipped
Mystic Museum of Art
Apr. 4, 2024 - Jun. 3, 2017
Mystic Museum of Art presents Flipped, a concise exhibition of works from the permanent collection focused on women artists. Erika Neenan, MMoA’s Curatorial Assistant, who curated the show, says the title of the exhibition reflects the under-representation of women artists in major permanent art collections in the United States, where women account for about four percent of total holdings. Flipped “flips” the numbers so that male artists account for four percent of the show.
Notable works in the exhibition include: paintings by museum co-founder Frances D. Davis; a charcoal drawing and watercolor by Charlotte Eastman, the former director of the Norwich Art School, whose works depict local scenes of everyday laborers; and, Julian Joseph’s Helene, a striking portrait of brilliant and floral color.
MMoA is open 11am–5pm Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is free.
