Earth Press Project: Witness
Minute Man National Historical Park
Sep. 1, 2024 - Nov. 1, 2019
Earth Press Project: Witness invites communities across America to contribute to a participatory public art project to be displayed at the Minute Man National Historical Park (MMNHP) in Massachusetts, September 1 – November 1, 2019.
In partnership with The Umbrella Community Arts Center, MMNHP’s Artist-in-Residence Nancy Winship Milliken Studio, invites participants to submit a one-word response to the question, “What change would you like to witness today as inspired by or in response to the events that took place on this historical landscape?”
In 1775, the people of the Massachusetts Bay Colony witnessed a revolution that reverberated around the world. As in the time of the American Revolution, there is today a world of possibilities before us. It all begins with a thought and a word.
A selection of publicly generated words will be imprinted onto a few hundred adobe blocks of earth using a hand-press technique developed in collaboration with Reflex Letterpress, and installed inside a “witness house” structure in the park, situated just outside the Visitor Center at 250 N Great Road, Lincoln, MA.
Ongoing submissions throughout the exhibition will be displayed online and at The Umbrella Community Arts Center. In addition to submitting a one-word response, the public is invited to explore the physical installation at the park, meet the artists and collaborators, participate in hands-on activities, and engage in conversation around the themes explored in the work.
