The recently renovated Bowdoin College Museum of Art in Brunswick Main is a corner stone of Maine’s expanding art community. The beautifully restoration museum houses thousands of paintings, sculpture, works on paper and decorative arts. In addition, the museum boasts a collection of colonial and Federal portraits by Gilbert Stuart, including Thomas Jefferson’s well-known presidential image and James Madison, with other works by Robert Feke, John Copley, Thomas Sully, and Joseph Blackburn. The antiquities collections contain over 1,800 Assyrian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine objects and defines one of the most complete collections of ancient art in any small college museum.
