Discover how the delicate translucency and speed of watercolor is ideally suited to capturing light, shadows and form of still life arrangements. There will be an emphasis on using the watercolor medium including correct brushwork, water/pigment ratio and the application to various watercolor paper surfaces. Learn how to mix fresh and effective color combinations along with the ability to see value as color. Study how to capture an effective still life painting through careful interpretation of what one sees. Successful composition and correct application of drawing skills will be discussed. Course includes instructor demonstrations along with each week a display of historical and contemporary artists. Students will be encouraged to develop a personal style and painting aesthetic.

Supplies Needed
Paper: 4 Sheets Arches or Fabriano 140 lb 22” x 30” Cold (semi-rough) or Hot (smooth) Press or a combination of – will cut to size in class. (OR Fabriano 140 lb. Cold Press Pad of 50 sheets 11” x 14”)
Watercolor Brushes: #12 & #8 Round Sable or Sable Synthetic Blend and a small brush for detail. (Optional: ½” or 1” Flat; Isabey Siberian Blue Squirrel Quill Mop #2, or #5) **If you can only afford one brush, please purchase a Pointed Round Size 10 Raphael Short Handle Kaerell Synthetic 8394 which is very versatile.
Paints: Winsor Newton preferred (or Cotman if too pricy to purchase Winsor Newton)

Small tubes: Cadmium Yellow, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red, Alizarin Crimson, French Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Permanent Sap Green,
Permanent Green #1 (made by Holbein), Raw Umber, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Black (Lamp or Ivory)
(*More Affordable Option: Pelikan Transparent Watercolor Pan Set of 12)
Optional colors: Viridian, Lavender (Holbein), Verditer Blue (Holbein), Lemon Yellow (Nickel Titanate), Permanent Rose and Davy’s Gray.
Palette: Enameled white ‘Butcher’s Tray Palette’ 11” x 15”
(Not needed if you choose the Pelikan Pan Set, only for tube paints)
Masonite Sketch board 15” x 16”
White Paper Tape ¾”
Pencils: HB and 2B
Eraser: Kneaded eraser only
Clear, transparent container with lid
Bounty paper towels
Small spiral bound sketchbook (Suggestion: Strathmore 100 sheets 5 ½” x 8 ½”)

About the Artist
Jeanne Potter holds BFA and MFA degrees from Syracuse University College of Visual and Performing Arts with post-graduate studies at the Art Student’s League in New York and master classes with Burton Silverman. A life-long watercolorist, she has taught painting and drawing for over 20 years and is a former faculty member of the Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC. She recently transitioned after ten years as Director of the Maritime Gallery at the Mystic Seaport Museum to devote her creative energy to her own painting and teaching. Jeanne is presently the Resident Curator and Director of Art Education at the Ocean House in Watch Hill, RI

As a teacher, Jeanne encourages her students to nurture their own art spirit and to learn from artists throughout history. She prefers to paint and draw from life, but also enjoys working in the studio with a focus on portrait, architecture and still life. Jeanne was honored at “Women in the Arts” day at the Connecticut state capital in Hartford and her work is represented in public and private collections.
