The Muskegon Museum of Art presents the John Steuart Curry Exhibition as part of its permanent collection. Featuring Tornado Over Kansas and Baptism in Kansas two of John Steuart Curry’s famous paintings. Both define Curry’s early career of the entire Regionalist art movement.
Tornado Over Kansas is a distinct period of U.S. history which was struggling to define the “American” true style of art. Tornado was celebrated from its first public showing and receivied a second place award at the “Century of Progress” exhibition in 1930. The painting has appeared in countless publications since its debut, including textbooks, magazines and the Hollywood blockbuster Twister. The painting was first illustrated in an article about the new U.S. style painters and included works by Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh, John Steuart Curry, and Grant Wood.
