Reverberation is a two person exhibition by Chellis Baird and Jim D’Amato, curated by Josh Campbell. It captures the dialogue of two artists pushing the boundaries of contemporary abstraction and the synergy between their bodies of work.
Baird creates complex visceral pieces by deconstructing, then reconstructing, a wide array of materials, while D’Amato uses line and flat space to create intricate biomorphic works. Both arrive at aesthetics which are paradoxically minimal and maximal, personal and universal. The surprising connections between them are revealed in this unique exhibition. “Reverberation comes out of an ongoing dialogue Chellis and I had about our practices, and the connections between them. We felt that High Line Nine’s distinct programming and location made it an excellent venue for our collaboration. We’re also thrilled to be working with Josh Campbell as our curator. Josh has witnessed the dialogue between us and has an uncanny ability to bring things together.“ says D’Amato.
“We’re both inspired by unexpected rhythms and energies, and use organic compositions to invite the viewer to experience new paths and dimensions. We both maintain a practice rooted in abstraction and movement, and collectively try to challenge the viewers perspective.” says Baird.
“Through their continued use of unorthodox materials, physically-demanding and highly-technical processes, and novel experimentations with color and form, Chellis and Jim have each created their own unique visual languages.” says Campbell.
