Here is an opportunity to explore the medium of acrylic and oil painting. This class deals with the beginning stages and foundations of learning about the color palette, mixing, basic brush techniques, and also canvas stretching and other surface preparation for those who need to learn these skills. We will focus on exercises that encourage experimentation and class participation. Class members are encouraged to work from direct observation, imagination, as well from their own photographs. The first week we cover: sketching and underpainting foundations, mark making, line, shape, form, space, and color relationships/theory, in a short series of three exercises. We then move on later to larger (if desired), painting lessons with further emphasis on content, composition, color, and desired personal techniques as the course progresses. Master studies and other more contemporary artists are examined through interpretation and techniques for warm-up exercises/ice breakers. These exercises and others are to be fun and demonstrate observing and interpreting various subject matter, but to understand touch, mark making, color and our own voice. We also will look at nature and our surroundings for inspiration. A relaxed, fun, and comfortable environment with a calm pace will be my objective for this class. A discussion of our needs, interests, and expectations for our time together will start off our first meeting.
