The Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture presents opening weekend outdoors opportunities to meet the town’s new Artist-in-Residence Nilou Moochhala at “Reflecting On Our Pandemic Experience,” her newly installed public art project in Menotomy Rocks Park, on view through August 31, 2021.
Moochhala’s installation combines drawings she created during a daily meditative practice begun during lockdown with new work developed in response to interviews with diverse Arlingtonians: town leaders, front-line workers, medical professionals, local business owners, and inventors/entrepreneurs. The artist talked to the new parents of a “pandemic baby,” middle school and college students, working parents, and retired seniors. Some of the stories she heard were heart-breaking. Others were inspiring accounts of public service, resourcefulness, and resiliency.
In total, 100 drawings are transformed into meditation flags and hung from pine trees to create an inviting place for contemplation and healing in a beautiful section this rustic park. A map with directions to the site – a 10 minute walk from the Main Entrance on Jason Street – is posted on the bulletin board.
This Artist-in-Residence project is a collaboration of the Arlington Commission for Arts and Culture and Robbins Library. It was funded by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council. Additional support provided by donations from individual supporters.
Moochhala will be on-site at the following times:
Thursday June 17, 5 – 7pm
Saturday, June 19, 10 am to noon
Sunday, June 20, 10 am to noon
