Dan Tepfer says:
The opening of my friend Catinca Tabacaru’s brick-and-mortar gallery in the Lower East Side, kind of a big deal, seemed to pose a question: how to mark the event in music? We had collaborated twice before, indirectly, at the Beethoven Festival in Chicago, where Catinca brilliantly paired the music being presented with striking and often surprising works of art. The intimate nature of her new space seemed to suggest something scaled down, so I suggested one of my favorite modes of music-making: the duo. Yamaha stepped in and provided a grand piano, and suddenly we had a series. From June 25th to July 16th, every Wednesday I will be playing with a different one of New York’s most creative musicians, from legendary jazz drummer Billy Hart to MacArthur-winning saxophonist Miguel Zenon, with ICE Ensemble avant-bassoonist Rebekah Heller, and guitar star Gilad Hekselman in between. I will be writing new music for each one of the nights. I am excited to get to present it with these great musicians in such a cool and unexpected new space.
