The Norton Museum of Art presents Doris Duke’s Shangri La a collection of objects from Duke’s very unique Hawaii residence. The show highlights her her personal role in collecting and commissioning works. The residence was located on five acres of interlocking terraced gardens and pools with exceptional views of the Pacific Ocean and Honolulu’s Diamond Head, Shangri La reflects Duke’s tranquil connection to nature and art.
Shangri La offers a west coast native inspired architecture that features carved marble doorways, decorated sliding panels known as jalis, gilt and coffered ceilings, and floral ceramic tiles. The building spaces connects artifact like silk textiles, jewel-toned chandeliers, and rare ceramics, to her international travels.
The exhibition will highlight furnishings and objects from Shangri La, with current photography and, vintage photographs and films, including building design and construction and its history.
