Organized by the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art and the Arkansas Arts Center; The Crossroads of Memory:Carroll Cloar And the American South features works from public collections as well as photos from private owners.

The paintings of Carroll Cloar (1913-1993), are among the most beautiful ever made of the American South. Works include photographs of ancestors, rural scenery, small town life, he captured the richness of a simpler America. His images of buildings, wild panthers, or figures represent a more dangerous side of human existence.

Cloar’s style imitates great American Realist masters and the pointillist of the Post Impressionists. He combines elements smoothly with the subtle images and themes of the Surrealism. He paints with saturated colors, repeating patterns, and shallow picture planes.
