Carnegie Museum of Art, founded by industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie is located in the Oakland section of Pittsburgh. The museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh is designed to enhance the understanding of art through its exhibitions, collections, and public programs.

The museum once focused on the work of the old masters, a series of exhibitions of contemporary art saw the development of the first museum of modern art in the United States. Early acquisitions included Winslow Homer, James McNeill Whistler, and Camille Pissarro. The new collecting grew to American art from the mid-19th century to French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings.

The Carnegie Museum of Art now offers European and American decorative arts from the late 17th century in addition to photography, film and video, Japanese prints, and African art.
