The old saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” seems to suggest that a photograph transcends language, but words have been a key part of many important photographers’ work—from the billboards and signs in many Walker Evans’ photos to Lee Friedlander’s 2019 book, Signs, for example. The interplay of language and image can create a vivid sense of tension, irony, or poignance. The size and shapes of a font are visual aspects that can carry as much weight as any other aspect in the frame.

Praxis seeks submissions of photographic art that includes written language as a fundamental aspect of the composition. The text may be in the form of signs or fragments of signs, handwriting scrawled over the photo, graffiti, palimpsests, just to name a few iterations of the theme. All genres, capture types, black & white and color, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

JUROR | DALLAS CROW
A high school English teacher for over twenty years, Dallas Crow co-teaches a course at Breck School with an art teacher in which students combine language and images. His own poetry, fiction, and nonfiction have been published in numerous periodicals, anthologies, and in the sidewalks of St. Paul. His chapbook, Small, Imperfect Paradise, was published by Parallel Press at the University of Minnesota. His photographs have appeared in galleries around the United States and internationally and on the covers of multiple books and magazines. His solo exhibition, The Other Border, was mounted at Praxis in the fall of 2018.

ACCEPTANCE | AWARDS
Fifty images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. A Juror’s Choice award, three Honorable Mentions and a Directors Choice award will be awarded and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog and the online show gallery. Award winners will receive a free show catalog. Juror’s Choice will receive free entry into three juried calls for entry of their choice. Directors Choice will receive free entry into two juried calls for entry of their choice.

ENTRY FEE | $35.00
The submission fee for entry is $35.00 for the first five images and $5.00 for each additional image. Payment is accepted by Credit / Debit Card through our secure online submission site.

USE RIGHTS
Artist retains all copyrights to their own images. The artist’s name and photo title will be included wherever the photographs are displayed. Artists whose photographs are accepted for exhibition grant Praxis Gallery the nonexclusive right to use submitted photographs for exhibition purposes and for the purpose of marketing the exhibition, marketing related programs and subsequent display on Praxis Gallery’s website.
