THEME | MAKING STRANGE
How do we document what happens and recurs everyday: the banal, the common, the ordinary? Can we rescue astonishment from the forgotten obvious by finding unexplored perspectives to depict our common places and familiar activities in startling and engrossing new ways? Praxis Gallery seeks the submission of photographic works that search for the iconic and ironic in the everyday world around us; that portray the people, places and things which have become ordinary to us in new, imaginative and expressive ways. All genres interpretations, capture types, color and black & white, traditional and non-traditional photographic and digital post-production processes are welcome for submission.

JUROR | CHUCK AVERY
Chuck Avery studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and graduated with honors in 1977 with an emphasis on the documentary mode of photography. His work since 2003 has concentrated on suburban expansion and sprawl, and the language and messaging found in historical sites and museums. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, from New York to San Francisco to Ping Yao, China. He was the recipient of a McKnight Fellowship in Photography in 2010 and produced a book titled Museum at the end of his fellowship. His work is included in the collections of the Weisman Art Museum in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Kansas and was featured in the Midwest Photographer’s Project at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, Illinois.

ACCEPTANCE | AWARDS
Thirty images will be selected by the juror for exhibition at Praxis Gallery. A Juror’s Choice award, two Honorable Mentions and a Directors Choice award [for the most cohesive and compelling series of images submitted] will be awarded and featured in the exhibition, the printed show catalog and the online show gallery. Award winners will receive a free show catalog. The Juror’s Choice winner will be featured in (and receive a complimentary copy of) Praxis Gallery’s Annual Review magazine.

ENTRY FEE | $35.00
The submission fee for entry is $35.00 for the first five images and $5.00 for each additional image. Payment is accepted by Credit / Debit Card through our secure online submission site.

Praxis Gallery and Photographic Arts Center is a community based arts organization that supports the development of emerging and established photographers. Praxis Gallery provides solo and group show exhibition opportunities to local and international media artists. Praxis Photographic Arts Center offers a range of learning opportunities for beginning, intermediate and professional photographers through workshops and seminars. With an emphasis on creative expression and innovation, Praxis promotes photographic exhibitions and learning opportunities that inform, challenge and engage the individual artist, with an imperative on promoting the work of our artists to local and international audiences.

USE RIGHTS
Artist retains all copyrights to their own images. Artists whose photographs are accepted for exhibition grant Praxis Gallery the nonexclusive right to use and reproduce submitted photographs for exhibition purposes and for the purpose of marketing the exhibition, marketing related programs and subsequent display on Praxis Gallery’s website. The artist’s name and photo title will be included wherever the photographs are displayed.
