Kristallnacht owes its name to the shards of shattered glass that lined German streets in the wake of the Nazis’s who had torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses destroyed during the violence. It also marked the turning point from Jewish oppression by the Nazis to the violence and destruction of the Jewish European population.
