This annual competition is open to artists living in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. The Freeport Art Museum’s annual Regional Juried Exhibition (RJE) mission is to offer established and emerging artists the opportunity to debut work created in the last two years. Opening on Saturday, April 30, 2022, the show runs through July 30, 2022. As FAM has gained a distinguished reputation for displaying a wide range of contemporary art, this exhibition has become a visitor’s favorite. Each year, FAM invites a new juror to select approximately 50 artworks for inclusion, with awards of first, second, third place, and honorable mention. Award winners are announced at the opening reception. The awards are 1st place $300, 2nd place $200, 3rd place $100, and honorable mention $50.

The museum retains 10% of the sales price of work sold while on exhibit during the Regional Juried Exhibition. We are proud to announce this year’s juror is the Chicago artist, Cleveland Dean. A multi-disciplined, self-taught, visual artist Cleveland Dean addresses internally personal and societal quandaries in abstract and conceptual ways. He pulls from various elements and life experiences and has formed an individual style that reflects his vision and studies of philosophy, sociology, psychology, history, and as a voyeur of humanity.

“Art is an entity that gives a platform for one to express themselves. For me, it is a combination of, not only a certain skill set but also an undeniable emotion that permeates the work itself. Work, to me, should wear its emotion on its sleeve regardless of genre. It is the artist’s duty to respect the work to give it life, not simply make a depiction. The artist creates an experience. To me, this is what art, what great art exercises. For me, this is how I view and critique art.

Cleveland’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Chicago and elsewhere. He has served as a mentor for the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs and has served on the Board of Directors for several arts organizations and is in numerous publications and private collections.
