Linear Stream is an exhibition of graphite drawings inspired by Paul Lorenz’s background in Bauhaus architecture and fine art. His pieces depict abstraction in its purest form of geometry, exploring minimalism and spatial relationships. His work uniquely bridges the principals of painting, drawing, and sound with the logic and detail of architecture. All three media are a balance of physical structure (wood, canvas, paper); visual structure (brush strokes, scrapes, tears, lines); and color, whether overt or atmospheric, allowing the process to be the final subject.

Through his graphite drawings, Lorenz incorporates the audible poetry of sound and composition. Each sound piece begins with a conceptual combination of mathematics and emotion, with the drawing dictating the direction and time and the composer directing the order, complexity and flow. Each work is an answer to a question exploring how marks and gestures can form a complete composition. Linear Stream is the result of what a line, series of lines, and volumes of lines can be.

Paul Lorenz was born in Chicago and has lived and worked in Chicago; Berkeley, California; and since 2003, in Paducah, Kentucky. After graduating from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, he went on to study oil painting at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the International School of Art in Italy (under Nicolas Carone and Irving Petlin) and the University of California, Berkeley. Lorenz is finishing his MFA in Music Composition at the Vermont College of Fine Arts. He is scheduled to graduate in February 2019.

Lorenz has exhibited with numerous galleries in the USA and Europe. As a member of Pintura Fresca, an international group of abstract artists, he has exhibited worldwide, with past exhibitions in Australia, Singapore, Austria, England and Sweden. Lorenz had his first solo exhibition in Europe in 2009 at Galerie Daniel Vigna lin Toulouse, France. Lorenz was the only US resident to participate in the historic Realites Nouvelles exhibition in Paris in 2012 and 2013.

Linear Stream will be exhibited in the second floor gallery of the Art Center. There will be an artist talk on November 17 from 1 – 3pm and a closing reception on December 16 from 1 – 3pm, which will be FREE and open to the public.
