Opening Reception – Friday, October 5, 6 – 8 pm
Able Fine Art NY Gallery is proud to present “Light and Color Remain,” a solo exhibition by Korean artist Yoonkyoon Joo. This exhibition will consist of his most recent series. Joo’s work throughout the decade consistently shows the howl of glee bouncing off his canvas. Through his art, Joo creates a balance in space through the simplification of objects and shapes.
Joo has appeared in a number of successful solo exhibitions such as the one at the Gallery Q in Tokyo, Kwanhoon Gallery in Seoul, and the Shanghai Art Salon. Joo has also taken a part in the group exhibitions in National Museum of Fine Arts in Manila and Korea and Japan Fine Art Exchange in both Seoul and Tokyo. Joo’s work and participation in global shows across Asia have led to his recent participation in the international art fair in the Seoul Art Show. Through these series of outstanding outcomes of his previous exhibitions, Joo is debuting his work in New York to introduce his work to the Western audience.
Joo creates the flow of light and shows how it turns to the concept of time in his paintings. He uses the retention of color by creating space through the composition of his paintings. To amplify the character of the object and subject of his work he depicts the concept of time and space by adopting into the color field painting. Joo is able to achieve these components in his paintings by simplifying the landscape, restraining the detail, and using the horizontal composition and division to use as spaces. While the art itself is static, Joo demonstrates the absence of the flow in time by using the vivid gradation and high saturated color to help his viewer find peace and balance within his paintings. Through this same concept, Joo uses geometric and simplified natural objects as appears in his piece, Space-Time. Remains in Light and Color (2018) to achieve the necessary variation to keep the viewer involved and engaged in his artwork.
Joo presents his work to show “the flow of light as it becomes time, and the retention of color as it becomes space.” He sees his approach “like diving into the water, I jump into the light and color that remain in time and space, and I measure with a ruler, put pieces together with tape, scrub and raking with sandpaper or a knife and dig with carving tools.” Joo’s work over the decade cries the shout of glee that is reflected in his process and his artwork itself. As an artist, Joo has also realized that emotional turbulence is part of the journey of creating great art. Without the journey of emotional turbulence of joy and frustration, Joo would not be able to achieve the rewarding experience that his work can ultimately evoke a sense of peace to his audience.
