Able Fine Art NY Gallery is proud to present “Companion in June”, an exhibition featuring two Korean artists, Dongyoung Kim and Soonmin Choi. This exhibition will consist of colorful mixed media paintings encompassing spiritual identities in each artist’s own unique styles. Through this exhibition, full of ode to life in Kim’s raw, organic and sensual paintings, and Choi’s playful and colorful bold images, the viewers will be able to take a moment to look back at their lives.
Dongyoung Kim, both BFA and MFA graduate from the University of Kentucky, shares her passion for life by exploring and embodying the fields of expression through plant-like shapes. Her interest in the spiritual identity is translated in her harmonious works of raw and natural subjects. Her works have generative nature derived shapes and elongated lines. The form of a 4-leaf clover, emphasizing on the symbol of fortune and luck, are often found in her work. As shown in Embracing (2015), she accentuate our desires in life which make us live. Her recent works truly present a complex nature of our lives today with her multi layering process of painting. The multi dimensions in her paintings is created by overlapping the images with disappearing traces and newly formed ones. This multi layered image she creates brings a dimension of time on the canvas like our lives; we are born, grow and age with the trace of time in and outside our own existence.
Soonmin Choi is also emphasizing the expression of spiritual identity throughout her entire body of work. A graduate in painting from Dong-Duk Women’s University Seoul, Korea, she has received multiple awards including National Grand Art Exhibition of Korea. In addition, she has shown her works to international audiences through numerous exhibitions and art fairs in France, Singapore, USA, China, Switzerland, Italy, UK, and more. Choi is best known for her mixed media artworks consisting of playful and bold paintings depicting the house she considers as her ‘Museum of Memories filled with gratitude and space.’ The piece, My Father’s House – First Love (2017) shows the houses with figures that represent happy and peaceful moment of our lives; the house has become a common motif in her paintings, relating to her expression of spiritual happiness and memories as a child. Through the bold colors and high contrast images of balloons and house, her works presented in “Companion in June,” share a narrative of emotional and personal relationships and feelings while presenting the viewers a playful and mysterious atmosphere.
While the two artists share the same interest in expression and deep meaning of spiritual identity, both artists present different styles that create an emotionally and sensually well harmonized exhibition. Choi states, “The deep awe of creation and curiosity along with the living creature is the origin of the power that enables me to continue working on my piece.” Together, the works of each artists present diverse visual paths to re-appreciate our lives that are given to us.
