STATEMENT
Beauty, Transition, and Celebration
The most precious thing about life is its uncertainty.
Being aware of the fundamental transitory nature of existence is a call to vital activity in the present moment. To understand the transitory nature of things with a sense of beauty and finiteness results in a hyper-nuanced appreciation of things and the phenomena of the world.

The Japanese term “mono no aware” is one of the most beautiful and panoramic concepts that illustrates this aesthetic of understanding. Impermanence and transience of life is a central tenet of Buddhism and that is where its incomparable appreciation for beauty lies. And yet, there is sorrow in this transiency, of the loss of people and things that are precious to us. But this melancholy is suffused with a quiet rejoicing in the fact that we had the chance to witness the beauty of life at all.

As the seasons of the year change, so do the seasons of our lives.
In this Printmakers Annual, we give tribute to Claudia Chapline and honor her work in the arts.
