CoCA announces new popup artist in residency program, Gener8, located in Capitol Hill through June 15th

SEATTLE, WA May 31,2017 — Seattle’s Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) is pleased to announce a new temporary artist in residency program, CoCA Gener8. Nine artists were selected to generate work and complete large scale projects in a large office in Capitol Hill. Local real estate developer, barrientos RYAN LLC, presented the opportunity to CoCA when they found out a building scheduled for demolition would be vacant for a month. The temporary location at 13th and East Pike is planned to be demolished in July, leaving CoCA with the opportunity to provide needed artist studios along with a chance to pull back the curtain and show what the artists are working on during Capitol Hill’s June 8 artwalk. Curators Sara Everett and Nichole DeMent wanted to include as many artists as manageable within the space. Final artists include Wyly Astley, Jean Bradbury, Jazz Mom, Amina Maya, Kamari Bright, Makena Gadient, Dylan Tucker, Stefan Gonzales, and Melanie Voytovich.

Gener8 artists are currently producing a wide variety of works that range from bent neon to paper cutouts. Their work will explore diverse topics that delve into the human experience. Visitors will be able to visualize loss and error through the personal stories recorded and transformed by Wyly Asley. Jean Bradbury and Stefan Gonzales will help visitors explore their relationship to the environment, and several artists reflect on the intersection of race, gender, and cultural identity.

CoCA is delighted to open the doors at 1300 E. Pike St. for these temporary studios during second Thursday Art Walk in Capitol Hill from 6-9pm on June 8. Visitors will have the chance to meet and converse with each artist about their abstracted language, photographs, paintings, sculpture, prints and more.
