J’aime Fougère (I Love Ferns) is an exhibition of fine-art black and white silver gelatin photographs exploring the beauty and diversity of native Northeastern wild ferns. The fields and forests of our region are widely inhabited by dozens of fascinating fern species which display not only an incomparable elegance but an adaptable nature that allows them to survive everywhere from dark rich soils to cracks in cliff walls. Ferns are as old as the dinosaurs, yet have adapted to almost every environmental challenge.
On this new exhibition, photographic artist Thomas Teich has written, “For the past five years, I have dedicated my photographic work in the springtime entirely to ferns. The native ferns of the northeast are, in my opinion, the most elegant, graceful and resilient members of the wild plant kingdom. I can’t think of a better way to present them than through the beauty of a gelatin silver black and white print.”
Thomas Teich is both an artist and a naturalist. He brings his passion for these elegant woodland creatures into the gallery in the form of large, highly detailed black and white silver gelatin images, each handmade in his traditional darkroom in limited editions. Exhibition includes a tour of Teich’s 1,000-square-foot darkroom/studio complex, where he prints photographic negatives up to 11×14” in size.
The exhibition will be open to the public during normal business hours from Thursday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 31st.
