“Yuanfen, the Chinese Buddhist concept of a predetermined “binding force,” dictates a person’s relationships and affinity for relatives, friends, lovers, or even passersby. Human beings do not have the power to decide when this ‘binding force’ comes or goes.” – Chung Chak

International artist, Chung Chak seeks to explore and break down stereotypes from the outside in. Fascinated by imagining what happens behind windows, Chak creates new environments from hundreds to thousands of photo-collaged images depicting hectic urban environments that were taken from around the world. These images, removed from their original context, are randomly connected and permanently bound within the artwork, giving Chak absolute power to control and design. Working to break down stereotypes, Chak leaves it up to the audience to decide if those created in the photomontages are true.

Chung Chak, an image-maker, formally trained as a designer, earned his MFA in graphic design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is currently an Associate Professor at the College of New Jersey. Chak’s works are in permanent collections at Penn State College at Williamsport, Lock Haven University, and in private individual collections. Chak has received numerous awards including Best of Show at the 2010 Art International, and Critic Choice Award at Maryland Federation of Art’s 35th Annual Art on Paper. He has mounted more than a dozen solo exhibitions, most recently at the Durham (NC) Arts Council, College Gallery at Lock Haven University, Sumei Multidisciplinary Art Center at the Button Factory in Newark, NJ, and at the BoxHeart Gallery, in Pittsburgh, PA. | www.chungchak.com
