DELIVERY OF COMPLETED LANTERN:
Friday, November 13, 10:00 am-5:00 pm and Saturday, November 14, 2015 12:00 pm-5:00 pm.

OPENING RECEPTION (Party in the Pines): Friday, November 20, 2015 6:00-9:00 pm.

PUBLIC EXHIBITION: November 21–December 6, 2015.

BACKGROUND: bread & lights is a festival presented by Cameron Art Museum to showcase the creativity of artists,
designers, bakers, and performers. This community event features a display of gingerbread creations by all ages and
artist-made lanterns. It strengthens cultural connections between the community and the arts and inspires the artist
within. bread & lights is a CAM fundraiser with all proceeds going to CAM educational programming.
Art of Illumination draws inspiration from traditional lantern festivals, marking the transitional moment of season’s
change and year’s end, reflecting on the past while garnering energy for the future. With the lanterns illuminating both
the darkness of longer nights and beginnings of the future ahead, the event will give rise to a shared experience of
reflection and anticipation. This inaugural 2015 festival and exhibition will launch a new CAM tradition expected to grow
with the museum and the community. CAM recognizes the crucial role of artists and art in creating an exceptional quality
of life for a community. Art, like a lantern, illuminates the mystery, empathy and wonder of human existence.

APPLICATION GUIDELINES: All proposal submissions and payment of entry fees are conducted via email to
[email protected]. Personal checks will not be accepted. Prior to submission, please direct any questions to
[email protected].

ENTRY FEE: $30 (non-refundable) permits a total of two lantern submissions per artist per year. It also provides:
• Required LED light source: G4 1.8 watt 360 degree illumination (comparable to 10-15 watt incandescent bulb) used
with ceramic socket lamp holder.
• Two (2) festival tickets (value $24) and one (1) Party in the Pines opening reception ticket (value $35).

SUBMISSION PROPOSAL: (Completed lanterns are not required for proposal submission.) Artists are strongly
encouraged to explore contemporary and traditional materials, techniques and aesthetics. Send proposal (including
images and information sheet) in a compressed file (zip file) renamed to lastname_firstname_lantern (FOR EXAMPLE:
Smith_J_lantern) via email to [email protected].
Images: For each work, please send up to five (5) different views
of lantern maquettes, illustrated plans or detailed drawings, representing varying perspectives, detail images of lantern
and/or details of lantern installation. Images must be 72 dpi in JPEG format and the size should not exceed 1000 pixels
on the longest side.
Inventory Sheet: Must include: Artist Name, Email Address, Mailing Address, Phone Number, Title of Work(s), Dimensions, Medium(s), Year(s) of Completion.
Proposal Description: Include as much information as
possible, such as the lantern’s color, texture, and other formal elements and conceptual basis for lantern design. PDFs
only for word documents. Mediums proposed for use need to be clearly defined. All work proposed must be the artist’s
original concept and design.
Optional: Artist’s statement, summary of studio practice and preferred mediums, biographical statement, CV.

INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS: Lighting: All lighting used in lanterns will be LED and will be provided by the
museum. No live flames or incandescent lighting will be accepted. Dimensions: All lanterns must be either hanging or
freestanding and fit into 2 feet wide x 2 feet deep x 6 feet high. There is no minimum size requirement. Installation:
Hanging lanterns must be ready to hang with provided LED lighting installed. Weight is not to exceed 5 pounds for
hanging lanterns. Standing lanterns must be freestanding and ready to install. No pedestals will be provided by the
museum. Lanterns may be kinetic, but not motorized, and require no maintenance by museum staff.
Medium and Material Limitations:
● No floral and plant materials. No hollow reed basketry, bamboo, driftwood, bird/insect nests, logs, large branches
(dried or newly cut).
● No food items (including but not limited to: fruits, vegetables and spices).
● No dried or preserved plants (flowers or herbs), or bark. No logs, found wood, dried branches, driftwood, tumbleweed,
pieces of bark or bales of hay. Permitted woods are milled or manufactured woods as purchased at a hobby or lumber
store.
● No feathers, fur, or skins.
● No handwoven, handspun textiles, fabrics or fibers (including raw cotton). However, manufactured textiles or fabrics
(because they have been treated) ARE allowed.

EXHIBITION, AWARDS AND PUBLICITY: All selected works will be installed and displayed in a gallery of CAM’s Brown
Wing. Images of selected works will be featured on the bread & lights and Cameron Art Museum websites. Honorary
awards will be announced at the Party in the Pines opening reception. The award winners will be given the opportunity
to teach lantern workshops and/or participate in artists’ talks about their lantern creation. Art of Illumination juried
exhibition will be publicized in regional press releases, social networking sites and via CAM’s email list.

SALES: Work is not required to be for sale. If work is for sale, artist receives 75% of sale price.

INSURANCE: All works are insured while on museum premises. Artist required to insure work in transit.

SHIPMENT: Artist will bear costs of incoming and outgoing shipment.
