Find SIGNS OF LIFE at Kehler Liddell Gallery Beginning September 11
Kehler Liddell Gallery presents Signs of Life, featuring multimedia artist Julie Fraenkel and photographer Matthew Garrett, from Thursday, September 11 – Sunday, October 12, with an Opening Reception on Sunday, September 14, 3pm – 6pm.
Signs of Life is a reflection of the nature of people – both real and imagined. Take, for example, the characters in Julie Fraenkel’s pieces Look at Me and Silence whose gestures invite the viewer to play along with the moment: what could be happening? what might be said?
Fraenkel describes her recent work as “a synthesis of play and metaphor, exploring ideas with the most basic materials.” Using oil pastel crayons and papier-mâché, she “reconnects with the joys of drawing, coloring, and shaping forms, the materials informing the images, stripping down and clarifying” her sense of the world.
Finding a new sense of the world is a theme that echoes in Matthew Garrett’s collection of photographs, as well. Shifting from social landscapes—generally “places where people aren’t”—Garrett’s attention is drawn out-of-frame, to family, to stuff, to life. In images like Fair Night and Super, viewers will find recognizable signs and symbols of family life, but also a sense of intrigue and wonder.
Fraenkel and Garrett are two of 25 member artists at the Kehler Liddell Gallery. Founded in 2003, the Gallery has grown to represent some of Connecticut’s highest achieving mid-career and emerging artists in a full range of media, from painting, printmaking and works on paper, to photography and sculpture. The Gallery is dedicated to representing critical perspectives that challenge and illuminate our culture and enrich our aesthetic experience, and is committed to establishing New Haven as an important center of arts and culture. Its programs revel in the excitement of cross discipline collaborations—including projects with musicians, theatre troupes, filmmakers, authors, dancers, creative entrepreneurs, and events like the Westville ArtWalk.
